We have a few here.. but it's like.. 4... lol.
I can answer this for you. The answer is yes there are plenty of dating sim games in Japan. And even some games where some people actually have 'real' relationships with the 2D characters, or even marry then. I'm sure you've heard of that guy who married the character from the Nintendo DS game, Love Plus. If not then go Google it. You could always visit these sites for some more insight about Japan as well. I visit these 2 regularly, dannychoo for some decent looks into Japan, he does some great photos too of Japan and the culture, also has a good community that shows you some good stuff sometimes. And Sankakucomplex if you want your does of random stuff about Japan. You can also find more information from just browsing the web, but those 2 sites will narrow down what you're generally asking HR. Perhaps I'm saving HR the time of answering the questions now lol.

Re: ask HR?
Well I've been reading dannychoo at Majin's suggestion but one thing I can't seem to glean from it it (you already said manga was pretty widely accepted), how accepted is dollfie and anime in Japan? I see a lot of things of people NOT liking it like the Akibaraha murders, etc, but also a lot of people doing it and a lot of stores selling it. But in general do people accept it/follow anime/buy dollfie? Do you?

Re: ask HR?
Being an otaku is a bad thing. You can watch 1-2 series a year, if they are really good, but you can't be a maniac about it. Almost everyone I knew, and no they didn't watch anime just this one series, like Code Geass. It was popular and it was well made. Everyone knows evangellion and they all like it. That is acceptable. However you watch more than 5 series a year, then you're in for trouble. Also One Piece is pretty popular with EVERY guy, not so much girls. Dollfie is really unacceptable. Makes you into a recluse and really creepy with no social skills. These are things otaku must be aware of and try to avoid if they want to live a happy life in Japan. That is also why going to Akihabara isn't such a great thing.

Re: ask HR?
Hey Hontou.
What are your thoughts on that Christopher Handley lawsuit? Please recall the discussion we had around a year ago regarding the American who was charged with possessing "loli-manga". It is interesting how it has taken this long (over a year) to deal with, ultimately resulting in a 6 month prison sentence. I, personally, am intrigued to ponder about how the American political system functions, as the arguments presented in the actual case seemed preposterous and farfetched. In an effort to accuse this man, they literally insulted Japan's media.

Re: ask HR?
Well as you can recall the man was charged with FAR more than what he was convicted with.
http://www.sankakucomplex.com/2010/02/13/lolicon-christopher-handley-gets-6-months-for-loli-manga/
The judge ruled a number of the charges unconstitutional, but two
charges based on “obscenity” stuck: “possessing obscene visual
representations of the sexual abuse of children and mailing obscene
material,” based on a technicality – he had committed an act of
“interstate commerce”
Any country has the right to check packages that are being "imported" or "exported" since it is going through customs. That being said no country would want their public recieving any uranium. It's very understandable. That is how the guy got caught in the first place. Now since the US is made up of states those states have regulations as well. I'm quite happy that the other charges were dropped, and only reasonable ones were upheld.
Also looking at the list of manga that he had, it is hard to say that he is innocent. They all were clearly loli-manga. Couldn't argue his way out for those, while the US could have locked him up for longer.
Going from 15 years to 6 months in this case isn't bad in my book. He got off REALLY lucky. Especially for being in the red-neck country. I would have been angrier if it turned out like the naked-man-in-his-house conflict.

Re: ask HR?
Lol yeah in Canada they check customs too, I've had my packages opened many times and they'll indicate to you it has been opened and checked by the Canadian Custom Agency or something. But this usually occurs on larger packages. Usually if it's something small then it doesn't get checked.

Re: ask HR?
The same can be said for ACTUAL asian girls. They look WAY YOUNGER than what we think. So would it be criminal to have a 19 yr Japanese porno? The first question with this issue was could they arrest the guy for having porno of characters in the legal age range and still be arrested. Imo that is a no, if the author said that the characters where legal then we can't dispute that but if the characters were in middle school or high school then that is the definition of child porn. You can sleep with anyone in the USA as long as they are of legal age and it's consensual.
The law was upheld imo. He was distributing illegal material and got what he deserved.

Re: ask HR?
even if the author said those girls he pictured are at a legal age, the guy would have read it with his own imagination for the age of those characters
