The editing department is a massive operation in and of itself, currently comprising nearly twenty active members. It receives by far the most applications of any department and is arguably a post that most people, given enough time and training, can learn to fill. However, editing duties themselves are fraught with technical difficulties—each series must be cleaned differently depending on the type of raws, and even the best cleaners constantly find room for improvement.
The department is really a unified front for two separate duties; cleaning and typesetting. It is easier to show what cleaning is rather than tell it, so take these before and after pages of the recent TWGOK 129 as an example:
Typesetting is the placement of text from scripts onto cleaned panels. This sounds easy, but it can be quite difficult considering the different fonts that need to be used, bold or otherwise irregular text, etc. While many cleaners are also capable of typesetting, Red Hawk also keeps several dedicated typesetters on call.
Organizing such a large department is no easy task, a challenge that is further exasperated by the difficulty in finding suitable officers. To make it to officer rank and succeed in the long term, an editor must not only be extremely skilled at cleaning, but also possess enough political acumen to pick their battles wisely. As it turns out, these traits rarely come bundled together. Of the last two editors that made it to administrator rank, one ran afoul of Takadanama and the other ran afoul of Ichibukai.
Today Takadanama is the only active editor with a red name, and he spends a considerable chunk of his time organizing the department—each cleaner needs to be alerted and sent the appropriate raw for every release they are assigned to, day in and day out. He has recently received some help, as two additional staff were promoted to Global Moderator rank to help organize operations and handle applications.
It is impossible to go into depth about every single member of the department, so instead today we are briefly spotlighting the three officers and providing a small summary about everyone else.
Takadanama
Administrator
Position: Cleaner, Typesetter
Location: Indonesia
Series: The World God Only Knows, Kimi no Iru Machi
Started: 2008
Sometimes if you want to get something done right, you have to do it yourself. During his years as the leader of Red Hawk Scanslations, Takadanama has become intimately familiar with that old adage. On the many occasions when other editors prove to be unavailable, when a series would otherwise face neglect, the leader himself is forced to get his hands dirty and get the job done.
It is unsurprising, therefore, that he remains the point man on the two most popular series, The World God Only Knows and Kimi no Iru Machi. The former is said to be especially difficult to clean, and very few have ever been able to do so based off of the weekly magazine raws. Takadanama continues to clean the weekly series only because there is literally no one else who can.
Turion
Global Moderator
Position: Cleaner
Location: Hungary
Series: Kimi no Iru Machi
Started: Oct 2010
Many editors joined the group during a major recruitment push in late 2010. Of this bunch, Turion stands out as one of the most technically proficient newcomers. His work was so good that Takadanama quickly named him one of the two most consistent weekly cleaners—the other being Pocky, who deserves an honorable mention.
An unassuming man from Hungary, Turion also proved to be one of the most involved recruits. These virtues quickly earned him a promotion to officer status. A humble man at heart, Turion was at first reluctant to accept his new responsibilities, but ultimately answered the call of duty. He is currently in charge of all applications concerning series that use magazine raws.
Vaelis
Global Moderator
Position: Cleaner, Typesetter
Location: France
Series: The World God Only Knows
Started: Dec 2010
As the only Frenchman on the staff, Vaelis dwells in an awkward time zone, and he can often be found in the staff channel along with British proofreader Jiggit, one of the few other members in the same predicament. Another recruit from the late 2010 push, Vaelis earned plaudits from his peers for his excellent work cleaning tankobon raws and typesetting for The World God Only Knows. An even temperament allowed him to take even fiery criticism in stride.
Both technically proficient and heavily active, Vaelis was selected for promotion with the endorsement of multiple administrators. He is currently in charge of all applications concerning series that use tankobon raws.
